The German Extension Course at SML November 10, 2009

What is it?
It is a free, full time, pre-ITT (Initial Teacher Training) German language course, fully-funded by the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA) for students who wish to embark on a teaching career in Modern Languages. Participants receive a bursary of £3,200 and numbers are strictly limited to a maximum of 20 places.
Participants need to have a conditional teacher training place and must have one modern language to degree or native speaker standard.
Students with no or little experience in German are able to attend an intensive two week “ab initio” programme prior to the main course. All students take part in a fully-funded two-week study visit to Hamburg where they are able to consolidate what they have learnt in class.
What are the course dates for 2010?
The course dates for 2010 will be:
- Ab initio course: 17th May to 28th May
- Main course: 1st June to 27th August
- Study visit: 18th July to 31st July
Why is Newcastle University offering this course?
The School of Modern Languages, with the support of the School of Education, Communication and Language Sciences, submitted a bid to the TDA and has subsequently been established as the provider for German Extension Courses in the North East region.

We would like to inform you of our first call for applications for the JSPS Short-Term Award Programme for fiscal year 2010.
JSPS is the leading research funding agency in Japan, established by the Japanese Government for the purpose of contributing to the advancement of science. JSPS plays a key role in the administration of various scientific and academic programmes, whilst expanding bilateral exchange between Japan and the United Kingdom. The Short-Term Award provides the opportunity for pre and post doctoral UK researchers and European and North American researchers based in the UK to visit Japan for 1 to 12 months to undertake cooperative research with leading research groups at Japanese Universities and Institutions. The programme is designed to provide researchers with first-hand experience of the research and living environment in Japan. Eligible research fields are not limited: computer, engineering, health, biological, life, natural and physical sciences, mathematics, humanities and social sciences etc.
The closing date for applications is Tuesday, 1 December, 2009 and successful applicants are asked to start their fellowship between May 2010 and the end of March 2011. The competition for these prestigious research studentships is now open to all UK and other EU students who wish to study for a full-time PhD in any of the following departments at Aberystwyth University:

Fellowships are available for five graduate students, men or women from the United Kingdom to study for up to two consecutive years in one of the Faculties of Harvard. The value of each Fellowship is at least $23, 000 plus tuition and health service fees.

The competition is open to British citizens at the time of application who are studying for a first or higher degree, have spent at least two of the last four years at a United Kingdom University or University College and will have graduated before taking up an award in September 2010, or are graduates employed in business, education or government who graduated not earlier than 2008 and wish to attend the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, Harvard Business School, Graduate School of Design, Harvard Divinity School, Graduate School of Education, Harvard Kennedy School, Harvard Law School and the School of Public Health.
Details of the competition and application forms may be obtained from the Registrar /Secretary of the applicant’s University or College. Forms can also be downloaded from the website.
Applications must be submitted through the head of the candidate’s University, or Head of College, as appropriate, in time to reach the Secretary, Frank Knox Memorial Fellowships, by 30th October 2009.

For Postgraduate Study at Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Kennedy Scholarships tenable in 2010 – 2011 are offered by the Trustees of the Kennedy Memorial Trust. About six to eight Scholarships are awarded which cover tuition and health service fees, the cost of travel to and from the USA., and provide an allowance of at least $22,000 for the year plus an additional travel grant.
Applicants must be British citizens at the time of application, who are also ordinarily resident in the UK., who have spent at least two of the last five years studying at a University in the United Kingdom and who will have graduated before taking up their Scholarship.
Applications for Scholarships should be made to the Kennedy Memorial Trust via the candidate’s UK university. Applicants should enquire which office in their particular university co-ordinates scholarship applications. The Kennedy Memorial Trust office may be able to help in this matter.
