To stay on the cutting edge of engineering, we need a strong supply of new ideas, approaches and ways of thinking. Fresh from university, with your imagination working in overdrive, we know that you’re great at this. And, when we combine this with our wealth of experience and expertise, that’s why we’re leaders in our sectors and the most innovative ideas can be realised.

As a result, we’ve a broad range of exciting opportunities so you can find the career where you can focus on what you do best and achieve your aspirations of becoming an even better engineer.

All we ask in return is that your passion matches that of the talented individuals that you’ll be working with, and that you have a love of learning that will enable you to gain even more skills in addition to the good degree you already have. Here’s a quick guide to where you might fit in:

Transport Sector– Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Transportation & Transportation Planning, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or Project Management.

Property Sector– Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Architecture, Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering.

Environment Sector– Environmental Management, Ecology, Landscape Architecture, Built Heritage & Archaeology, Planning & Urban Regeneration or Waste Management & Contaminated Land.

Natural Resources Sector– Civil Engineering, Geology, Engineering Geology & Geotechnical Engineering, Mining or Water & Coastal Engineering.

In addition, you’ll want to take responsibility, and in turn the credit, for your own work. Bursting with new ideas, you’ll be the type of person who wants to put them into action. Although some of the time you’ll work on your own, you’ll also need to be comfortable sharing ideas in a team and working with others on a project. And as a result of your excellent communication skills you’ll be confident and credible with a wide range of people including clients, contractors and senior team members.

Now all you need to do is to find out which sector and speciality is going to be the most rewarding for you, and apply.

Training contracts

Whether you’re an undergraduate or a mature student, you need to start thinking about your application two years before you want to start your training contract. We’d also like to hear from you if you’re planning to take time out after your studies. We review all applications once the deadline has passed. We then conduct telephone interviews with around 90 candidates in mid August, followed by face-to-face interviews with approximately 40 people during the first week of September. We make all offers by the end of September.

Vacation placements

You can apply for a vacation placement at any stage during your studies, regardless of your degree discipline. You need to show that you have a keen interest in law, now and in the future. Vacation placements are also open to you if you’re a mature student or planning to take time out after your studies. It’s a good idea to apply for a placement in the same year as you apply for your training contract.

We normally get around 500 people applying for our one-week placements in June and July. We review all applications after the deadline and conduct telephone interviews with around 90 candidates at beginning of March. We then offer 48 people a placement by mid March.

Application deadlines

2011 Training contracts: 31st July 2009

2010 Vacation placement: 31st January 2010

Please visit www.walkermorris.co.uk/trainee for further information and details on how to apply.
