Planning your career – Wednesday 30 September 2009 1:00 – 2:00 pm (Lisa) Help on making decisions and plans about your future career. Includes self-awareness, how to carry out careers research and formulate a careers action plan.
PGCE applications – Wednesday 7 October 2009 1:00 – 2:00 pm (Lesley) and Thursday 8 October 1:00 – 2:00 (Lesley)Now is the time to be working on your PGCE application. Entry to courses is very competitive and you need to get your GTTR form right. Practical advice on what to include and how to impress admissions tutors. Wednesday and Thursday sessions are the same.
Job Seeking and Employability – Wednesday 14 October 2009 1:00 – 2:00 pm (Lisa)
Tips on the best ways to look for jobs and an insight into the skills and qualities employers are looking for, especially in a time of recession.
Personal Branding – Tuesday 20 October 2009 2:00 – 4:00 pm (Lisa and Lesley)
We all have a personal brand. This session helps you identify and control your behaviour, appearance and attitude to that you create a great first impression when it comes to job interviews and career progression.
Application forms (including on-line applications) – Wednesday 21 October 2009 1:00 – 2:00 pm (Lisa)
Learn how to tackle those difficult questions and write effective personal statements.
Assertiveness – Tuesday 27 October 2009 2:00 – 4:00 pm (Lesley and Lisa)
Explore and learn the behaviour that can make you appear confident. Practical session including analysis of video material and the chance to role play (only if you want to!)
CVs and covering letters – Wednesday 28 October 2009 1:00 – 2:00 pm (Naresh)
Your first contact with employers needs to be sharp and positive. Make sure you make a good impression and sell yourself effectively.
Interviews skills – Wednesday 4 November 2009 1:00 – 2:00 pm (Jim)
Advice on how to prepare for interviews, how to deal with typical interview questions, as well as your nerves.
Assessment Centres (second stage interviews) – Wednesday 11 November 2009 1:00 – 2:00 pm (Jim)
It’s often the next stage of the selection process. If you are invited to an assessment centre you really are close to getting a job offer; make sure you are prepared to make the most of the opportunity.
PGCE Interviews – Wednesday 18 November 2009 1:00 – 2:00 pm (Lesley)
Interviewers are assessing your suitability for a teaching career, not just a course, and expect an awareness of teaching issues. Find out how to prepare for the questions and activities you are likely to encounter.
Presentation Skills – Wednesday 25 November 2009 1:00 – 2:00 pm (Bob)
Giving a presentation is increasingly part of the selection process. Learn how to structure your presentation, what to cover in it and how to avoid the basic mistakes.
Psychometric tests – Wednesday 2 December 2009 1:00 – 2:00 pm (Bob)
Find out about different kinds of psychometric tests used in career planning and job selection processes.

Explore these and other subjects further in our new Semester 2 programme of careers talks and workshops. (Details available in December).
It is essential to book a place if you would like to attend any of the sessions. All bookings are online www.wlv.ac.uk/careers– and open two weeks before the talk. All sessions take place at City Campus; room to be notified at time of booking. Sessions start promptly at the time stated and last approximately an hour, except for the Launchpad Extra sessions which last approximately 2 hours. The end of term is nearly here but don’t forget: Careers & Employment Services are open all through the summer.
The Careers Information Room is open and Careers Advisers will be available:
Monday – Friday 11am – 4pm during term time
Monday – Friday 1pm – 4pm during vacations.
