Recent graduates from low income families can now benefit from a bursary award offered by youth and education charity Raleigh in partnership with the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS). The scheme gives recent graduates the opportunity to enhance their employability skills through community and environmental work in remote communities overseas.
The Raleigh Graduate Bursary Award for Volunteering Overseas was launched on 30 July 2009 and will see 500 graduates offered places on a Raleigh expedition to Costa Rica and Nicaragua, Borneo or India over the next year. Each graduate will take part in a ten-week training and development programme, which challenges participants physically and mentally, and teaches them to work alongside others from different countries and socio-economic backgrounds to learn the value of volunteering.
The bursary is open to recent graduates aged 24 or under who can prove that an overseas expedition would be beyond their financial means without assistance.

Peta Levi MBE (1938-2008), founder of ‘Design Nation’ was influential in providing innovative platforms for designers
to launch new work, whether as a graduating student at the ‘New Designers’ exhibition that she founded and
pioneered, or as a new business launching at leading international trade shows such as ‘100% Design’.
The Peta Levi Memorial Bursary is intended to enable designers at whatever stage of their career to create a significant new piece of work that can be launched to architecture, design, press and retail visitors to 100% Design at London’s Earls Court.
For a younger designer this may be a way of launching themselves in a very special way, for more established
designers it may be the reason to take some time to create an entirely new piece of work or to explore new
materials or processes.
Applications are open to any designer based in the UK – the Bursary winner will be judged by the 100% Design
selection panel to have submitted the most outstanding proposal for an installation. Entrants should submit the
standard 100% Design downloadable application form together with up to 200 words describing the vision for the
installation and a minimum of one/maximum of six images or concept drawings.
Deadline for applications: Friday 29th May 2009.
