If you are applying for a PGCE for next year don’t forget deadlines are approaching fast.

Primary teaching courses – the deadline for applications is 1st December. Applications must be received by this date to guarantee that you are considered by your first choice training provider. After this date training providers can choose to stop receiving applications for primary courses.

Secondary teaching courses The December 1st deadline does not apply to secondary teaching applications. Applications can be received any time between September 2009 and June 2010. However, popular training providers often fill up their places early in the application cycle. To ensure you are considered by your first choice, get your application in as soon as possible!

Don’t forget, your application takes time and needs to be of the highest standard to increase your chances of being offered an interview. You need to allow plenty of time to work on your application and in particular your personal statement. This requires careful consideration and thought so don’t leave it until the last minute! Make sure referees are given plenty of notice for writing references in order to ensure your application isn’t delayed.

No matter how good you think your application is, it is always a good idea to have it checked over. Our careers advisers can go over your form with you, making suggestions and recommending any changes that they think will improve your application.

What is it?

It is a free, full time, pre-ITT (Initial Teacher Training) German language course, fully-funded by the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA) for students who wish to embark on a teaching career in Modern Languages. Participants receive a bursary of £3,200 and numbers are strictly limited to a maximum of 20 places.

Participants need to have a conditional teacher training place and must have one modern language to degree or native speaker standard.

Students with no or little experience in German are able to attend an intensive two week “ab initio” programme prior to the main course. All students take part in a fully-funded two-week study visit to Hamburg where they are able to consolidate what they have learnt in class.

What are the course dates for 2010?

The course dates for 2010 will be:

  • Ab initio course: 17th May to 28th May
  • Main course: 1st June to 27th August
  • Study visit: 18th July to 31st July

Why is Newcastle University offering this course?

The School of Modern Languages, with the support of the School of Education, Communication and Language Sciences, submitted a bid to the TDA and has subsequently been established as the provider for German Extension Courses in the North East region.

Who can I contact for further information?

If you have any queries, or to apply for a provisional place on the course, please e-mail German.Extensioncourse@ncl.ac.uk

or ring the course secretary Liz O’Sullivan: 0191-2223001

If so, you will shortly be receiving a questionnaire by post or email asking you to take part in research to find out what you have gone on to do after achieving your qualification. It should only take a few minutes to complete and everyone who participates in our research will be entered in a prize
draw
with prizes ranging from £25 to £100.

Alternatively, you can fill in the questionnaire on-line at http://dlhe.hesa.ac.uk. You will be able to do this from 16 November 2009 until 12 March 2010. You will need your student reference number, which is on the label on the questionnaire.

The survey we are asking you to take part in is a national survey of everyone who has recently qualified from any university or HE college in the UK. If you want to find out more about the survey and how it is used please click here. The information you provide will also be very useful to us at the University of Wolverhampton, as it helps us to advise our current students about the opportunities that might be available to them. We really appreciate your help with this research.

Meanwhile, there are several government initiatives available if you’re still thinking over your options after completing your course. Please click here for further details:
